The European Union is the second most powerful entity in the World, but it is unique for its internal system as it is not a political union nor can it be considered a simple customs union: it is something more, well-regulated co-operation of independent countries at many levels. This report is for all those people who are interested in how the European Union works, especially for those who want to study beyond their home country. On the other hand it is for all the people who want to know more about how to live a sustainable way of life even if they are living in densely-populated areas. We consider it a crucial problem, because 80% of Europe’s inhabitants live in urban areas.

This report was written by three international students coming from two new member states, Latvia and Hungary. For us it is a great possibility to learn in such a highly developed country like The Netherlands, so that when we return back to our homeland we will be able to use our large-scale experience gained here.
Parliament has won more powers to amend laws and to check the activities of the other institutions.
The Council of the European Union, the Union’s other legislative body, which is made up of ministers from the Member States, is a participant in the work of the European Parliament.
The mobility charter envisages practical guidelines to help people study in a foreign country. They include information, general preparation and logistical support.
As we are members of the European Union, is important to understand how its institutions work, what functions they have. This report tries to give an insight in their composition, working methods, aims, members and the way of co-operation between different institutions. On the other hand it examines two current topics which the European Union faces these days and tries to describe how the different members handle these problems. One topic is about education and mobility, which is very up-to-date for all those people, who want to study abroad and gain more quality experience. The other issue is the strategy on the urban environment, which is important not only for the people living in the present, but also for the future generations.

To achieve these aims we have read books, articles on the Internet and newspapers, got the information through TV.…
