The fairy tale is about a girl who is given to a dog by her father in return of a favour the dog has done for him. The course of events follows the well-known folk tale pattern. There are many indicators in the structure of the text that shows it is a folk tale. First, it is the standardized beginning and ending – the tale starts with the stock phrase ‘Once upon a time’ and in the end the dog turns out to be a prince and the end of the tale is signalled with ‘Of course they were married and lived together happily’. …
