Film means something that is created by men. It is kind of theatre in the TV – box. Some cannot live without TV - soap operas, cartoons, etc. Behind all this is a great history of film industry and its development. Actors, producers, Hollywood, etc. is part of it. The film making is a long and time consuming process and, as a result, a film comes out. Countries work on film translation for their people to understand. Usually for film first night performances in cinemas a film is subtitled not dubbed.
This paper aims at acquainting its readers with film/ broadcast preparing process called subtitling. How is it that in source language actors say one thing and in the target language subtitles express absolutely another thing but still conveys the same idea? The answer to this and many other “subtitling” questions is to be found in the following pages. For the author of this paper the aim of writing is to get more detailed information about film subtitling – what are the methods of this process. As well as find out more theoretical and practical things like use of punctuation and ways of making subtitles to use them in future.
Though there are very little literature sources on this topic the material is very informative (methods and techniques of subtitling, how to sharpen up one’s knowledge of subtitling, etc.) and gives a brief but firm background about film subtitling. It gives a general insight and therefore is advisable for reading it not only by those who study some kind of translation but also by any other students.
The main points the author emphasized in this paper are: characteristics of subtitling, advantages and disadvantages of subtitling, process of subtitling, and other important things connected with the subject of the paper.
The primary material in the investigation consists of texts from” The Subtitling Art” and “A Textbook of Translation” as well as Internet sites. Many sites contain information on the topic but the exact information is to be looked for very carefully.
The author will study the theory of the subtitling, process of subtitling and kinds of subtitling. In practical part the author shows her tries to use subtitling programme and give general information about punctuation use in subtitling.…
