Political Parties at the Local Level
This viewpoint may be possible; however it is not realistic, and rather than founding geo-specific political parties the answer may be found in RAGs which seek only to influence local government rather than form local government. The power of interest groups and RAGs is greatly underestimated at all levels of government. It has been shown through these three cities experiences that guenuine community based political parties are not practical, the provincial government of the day will always find a way to influence the municipal government; whether through running its own members for council or through legislative powers granted in section 92.8. Furthermore, those who seek careers in politics will follow a provincial party line rather than doing what is perhaps wanted by the community. Thus political parties at the local level is not the answer to the municipal governments problem. The municipal system is inherently flawed by section 92.8, therefore the only real solution to giving accountability and legitimacy back to the local level is to give the local level the power over itself. This would increase voter turnout rate, access and participation as well as effectiveness at the local level. …
