Metallica, a talented heavy metal band (particularly Lars and James), was outraged at the fact that consumers, or potential customers, were able to download their music on the internet for free. They filed a lawsuit against Napster in the US District Court, Central District of California, Circuit 9, alleging that the company encouraged piracy by allowing its users to trade copyrighted songs through its servers. According to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, the suit accused Napster of: copyright infringements, unlawful usage of digital audio interface device, and the violation of the Racketeering Influenced & Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
