"Beloved" by Toni Morrison
What white people did to the slaves was not just the stealing of their freedom, but along with violence they had played with their minds, shaped their personalities with their actions, and changed their lives forever.
In short, what slavery did was steal the human part. That is why babies were not nursed by their mothers because they had to work, why women were repeatedly raped and beaten, and why men were tortured , killed, sold . Because they were just objects in the eyes of their master.
The reason why Baby Suggs was disappointed was not because of her son's probable death or because of Sethe's killing her daughter, but because she realized the fact that she couldn't even rely on black people any more.
