The 60's revolution of gay movements assisted a new era to form for sexuality so that Gunnison's dream could come true; that 'gays everywhere ... [could] be able to receive the same kind of respect as respectable heterosexuals' (Duberman, 1993, p16). Duberman uses anecdotes to portray the endeavors gay society went through to be permitted political acceptance for their social preference, and in that same manner, gay society not only battled against heterosexuals, religion and the police force, but also against their low self esteem and personal judgments upon themselves (Duberman, 1993, p3-4). Gay people were viewed the same manner as witches of old times were (Duberman, 1993, p14).while the state of homosexuality was viewed as a sickness or psychological disorder (Duberman, 1993, p3-4).
The 60's may have seemed as a 'buried epic of freedom' but was a time where the persecuted began to realize that there was an option for a better future and a better way of life if they only fought for it; 'At moments when human freedom surges up from unknown depths, famous leaders and powerful institutions do not, in fact count for much!' (Duberman, 1993, p1) Duberman talks of the experiences gays had as they clung to a secretive circle of similarly experienced people, which was clinging to another more secretive group of more experienced gay circles and all in all was 'going everywhere, visible nowhere' (1993, p13), yet times may not have changed all that much since then. …
