The court was preventing discrimination against articles of commerce. The Supreme Court was avoiding the state deciding on rules of outer state commerce, and preventing restrictions unless there is some reason. The Supreme Court rules this way for two reasons. First, upholding the constitution, which is their first priority. The constitution provides that there is uniform commerce across states. Second, setting an example that states cannot do as they choose and must also abide by the constitution. The Supreme Court prevented discrimination based on origin, people should not pay more because they live in a different state.
