William Shakespeare “Hamlet”
“The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”, often shortened to Hamlet.
Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare sometime between 1599 and 1601. It is one of his most popular and powerful plays. It is Shakespeare's longest play with 30,557 words.
Main characters are Hamlet, Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet also known as the Prince of Denmark is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his uncle. Claudius is the King of Denmark and uncle of Hamlet. He is a calculating, ambitious politician. But Gertrude is Hamlet’s mother, recently married to Claudius. Gertrude loves Hamlet deeply, but she is a shallow, weak woman.
Shakespeare is telling a story about Prince Hamlet. Hamlet’s father died. His uncle Claudius marries Hamlet’s mother Gertrude within a month of his father’s death. The ghost appears to Hamlet to revange his murder. But Hamlet is not entirely sure it’s true. Hamlet had an idea to test his uncle’s guilt. He will have the players perform a scene closely resembling the sequence by which Hamlet imagines his uncle to have murdered his father, so that if Claudius is guilty, he will surely react. Hamlet doesn’t have many opportunities to do kill his uncle, but when he had, Claudius was praying. At the end of the play Gertrude takes a drink with poison in it, but it was ment for Hamlet. So Claudius also kills Gertrude. But in a sword fight dies Claudius and short after that Hamlet.
In 1990 the movie “Hamlet” was created by producer Kenneth Branagh. The genre is drama/thriller.
