Sexually transmitted diseases are running rampant through out the world today. This global epidemic is effecting the world's total health level and is severely straining the world health care system. The diseases gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes simplex, genital warts, chlamydia, and chancroid effect all cultures and are transferred very easily. This paper will outline the causes of each disease, cures for each disease, preventative measures that can be taken to protect ones self against the diseases, statistics for each disease, the symptoms/signs and side effects for the diseases.
The annual cost of treating, tracking, & reporting STD's in the US exceeds 3.5 billion dollars. 95% of all of the STD expenditures in California and New York go for HIV/AIDS. 1.3 billion dollars are spent each year on AIDS research and less than 10% of this goes for STD control programs.
In 1997, half of the 12,000,000 infectious diseases contracted in the United States were cases of gonorrhea. Together, gonorrhea, syphilis, and AIDS accounted for two thirds of all reportable infectious diseases in the United States. In 1997 the reported cases of each disease were: Gonorrhea 1,100,000, Syphilis 120,000, Congenital syphilis 3,500, Chlamydia 4,000,000, HPV (genital warts) 500,000 - 1,000,000, Genital herpes 200,000 - 500,000, Trichomoniasis (crabs) 3,000,000.
