Robert Graves was born in Wimbledon in 1895 and became English poet, classical scholar, novelist, and critic who produced some 140 books. Graves's childhood was a happy one, although he hated his school. He was educated at Charterhouse, where he started to write poetry. Graves's later works often challenged academic and popular conventions, emphasizing the value of mythology and poetry over science and technology.
“The Shout” actually is not one of his most famous works, but it is noticeable with its supernatural favour and with exciting comparison of the different and in some cases very dangerous world – reality and fantasy world. These two worlds are so different that sometimes people are so busy and don’t notice what happens around them, because sometimes this fantasy world takes over people and all reality. Sometimes people are so naive that dreams and imaginations are taken over people’s emotions and they unnoticed that they are part of fantasy life.
Robert Grave’s story ”The Shout” is the evidence that reality and fantasy world are too close to each other and we people should be careful and avoid the dangerous sides of that world. Moreover, “The Shout” is very psychological story. There author is trying to tell us that there are many mysterious events in this life. Besides, the author has mentioned many unusual facts and also characterises people very freely, for example, giving them a part of superstition, madness and also a little bit of magic.
As we all know, dreams play very important role for people and that is one of the main ideas of this work. We can see the influence of dreams and, although they are mostly our thoughts, it is a strange and incomprehensible action of our mind.
