Language, Chinese in particular, was the most important skill to master above all else. Since the age of nine, my parents began to drive me to Chinese school every Saturday morning; it was hell. I the type of person who likes to sleep in on weekends, but that was no longer possible because of classes. I wanted to learn Chinese, but I was only nine years old and I was lazy. Regardless of how much my parents wanted me to go to Chinese school, I still refused to go. I wanted to learn Chinese by studying abroad, but that was impossible accomplish especially for a nine year old kid. When I lived in Hong Kong, I was fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin. It was not until when we moved back to the United States where I had lost my ability to speak Cantonese. I did not have the desire to continue to learn Chinese anymore; practicing how to speak and write English was already too big of a task for me.…
