Due to a patient's mental illness, if left in society, discrimination within the community is evident as they do not understand or know how to handle the strange behaviours of the mentally ill. This could have the consequence of that individual having a poor quality of life in his/her domestic environment. According to a Town hill Hospital staff member, patients, especially from rural areas, are frequently seen with septic wounds on their ankles and wrists caused by wire restraints, applied by their family members, cutting into their flesh. It can thus be seen the fact that society is not able to control the mentally ill and psychiatric hospitals are better able to protect, care and treat these people.
Although much controversy surrounds mental institutions and their treatment of patients, it has been through a series of trial and error that we have reached the standard of mental health care given today. Power has been abused in these institutions through the loopholes given to protect the mentally ill. However, it is easy for one to linger on the negative abuses and one must also consider the number of patients who have made a full recovery. Most importantly, one must also acknowledge the majority of patients who have to live their lives with mental illness and are better able to function in society with the inpatient and outpatient care and follow up provided by mental health departments.
