There are many aspects in defining the meaning of the statement "die to oneself." Many people do not now the meaning of being a Christian the way the bible intended.
In Matthew 10:36 it states that "And a man's foes shall be they of his own household" which means that even one's family may not stand by him in his choice of following the Jesus.
