Summary
First screens were used in cinemas. About two centuries ago people went to the cinema to see a movie. The light went through a film and was reproduced on a white screen. The first computers had lamps as indicators but they needed many lamps to show all data. So people invented lamp tubes with red-hot strands to indicate numbers in calculators or in cash registers.
A big step was the invention of CRT- cathode ray tube by F. Braun. They were first used in measuring instruments. Boris Rosing sent the first television signal and then began the era of television. In last century the CRT screen was improved to a color CRT screen. In showed pictures using RGB(red, green, blue) technology and could be used as a computer monitor.
Next step is the LED screen . It is made to show numbers . Each segment shows only one number. LED screens are used in elevators, clocks, early calculators.
Liquid crystal display is widely used in almost every electrical device and gave a chance for further invention of LCD monitors. First LCD ‘s had low resolution and were black and white. The latest type of screen is LCD colored display. This consists of pixels and has a dramatically improved resolution. These displays are used in computer screens, portable devices , TV’s and are integrated in mobile phones too.
The future step is a flexible OLED display. It is very thin and energy consuming. The resolution is better than in a LED and LCD display. These were first invented for military purposes. They can be like stickers and are foldable.
