Taking a Year off Before Entering the University - Yes or No?
All the things considered, a gap year has many benefits for students if we look from different perspectives. The decision to take a year off is a serious one that could affect your future career. If you have actively participating in anything and your gap year description is full of various activities, your CV or university application would stand out from the crowd, what could make you a perspective applicant or employee. U.K. Foreign secretary argues that “Taking a Gap Year is a great opportunity for young people to broaden their horizons, making them more mature and responsible citizens” (cited in Simpson, 2005, p. 453). They decide to ta take a rest, to gain new experience which would be helpful for further studies or travel and discover themselves. Taking a break is an excellent opportunity for students, but before they come to this decision, they should carefully evaluate whether it is necessary and what impact it would have on their university application and future carreer. While many students spend their last year at school sending applications to different universities, the other part decide to take a gap year before college. According to the American Gap Association, a gap year is defined as “An experiential semester or year "on," typically taken between high school and college in order to deepen practical, professional, and personal awareness” (American Gap Association, n.d.). Also there are some statistics, where it is said that 60% of students are sure that the gap year has helped them in choosing area of study and 66% of students took their academic process more seriously after a year off. While many parents are usually keen on their children education path and insist on applying to university the same year graduating school, we can look at this situation from both sides. During the gap year students can discover who they are and what their passion is[1], get some work experience and earn money [2], what is more, a gap year enables students to get back to the university with vigor and focus, and sometimes even maturity [3], not only this,a gap gives gives you a chance to explore the world [4].
