The criticism Douglas put forth in his speech "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery" could apply just as well to these slave states.
<Tab/>"The Hypocrisy of American Slavery" is often quoted by civil rights groups in their disgust at the history of slavery in America. The past cannot and should not be forgotten, slavery played a large part in the labor force of the nation in its early days. However, many of these groups that continue to complain about the nation's history of slavery could be fighting to end slavery which continues today in other parts of the world. Hammering away and denouncing the past is never going to change it, but fighting for the rights of humans today can make a difference.
