I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Should not be read in schools
Although literature is a subject that should be explicit and from the heart, some books are completely saturated with truth and therefore makes the book too intense for high school reading. One of these books is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, contains multitudes of hurtful and almost perverted rape scenes. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings should not be taught in high school due to its graphic nature, racism, and the adverse effect that they have on our students growing minds.
In her book, Maya Angelou talks about her being raped at the age of eight, but the way that the event was written and the explicitness of it can seriously put ideas into the minds of the students. …
