One day I was with a geisha taking a walk by the Shirakawa Stream on our way to the theater. I saw a girl sitting on a little stone wall at the edge of the stream and crying.
The day was too pretty for such unhappiness so I came up to her and said what I thought. She looked up at me with astonishment in her eyes, because she hadn’t imagined that someone could come and talk to her, but soon she looked down.
Geisha, with whom I was together, said not to waist time, talking to the crying girl.
She didn’t want to be late for the kabuki play. At that moment I understood that she hadn’t god any compassion in her heart.…
