Transport and storage has been made more efficient and extended business opportunities by increasing the distance wine can travel. Two key factors are the development of refrigeration and stainless steel storage. These two innovations have greatly advanced the globilisation of the wine industry.
Mechanical harvesting is a new technology which has been widely used in developed countries which do not have a plentiful supply of cheap labour available for pruning. It is less accurate and the original outlay on capital is very expensive, however over the longer term it is more economically viable.
The internet and information technology has opened many corridors for the viticulture industry, especially in wholesaling and retailing. The quicker and easier transfer of information has allowed for more hours spent on the property as consultation and education on certain issues can be done in spare time over the net instead of driving into town. It allows farmers to more easily share information worldwide on patterns of production and issues of disease.
