Joel has remained in a state of semi-retirement as a pop songwriter and recording artist since River of Dreams. Meanwhile, worldwide sales of his back catalog topped the 100 million mark in 1999. Joel closed out the century with a gala Millennium Eve concert at New York's Madison Square Garden. (Inductees, 1999)
Summary
Rock and Roll is here to stay! There are hundreds of performers who have come and gone. We have coined the phrase, "One hit wonders." as performers have a song that reaches number one or the top ten and then they fade as quickly as they came on the scene. There are other performers who have withstood the test of time and their legendary careers are proof of this.
We have seen dance crazes come and go, such as the twist, jitterbug and disco, but one thing remains the same, where there's music, there's art, life and vitality. While we may never know what makes for the success of one performer over another, there will always be music and life will always be its lyric.
