Class Structure
- The definitive place for a Spartan woman in the public eye is really quite difficult to define; because Sparta was organized in such a way that everybody from a helot to an equal has a specific job or function, but it seems that women had no real definitive function other than to breed healthy and robust children.
- The job of a woman traditionally in Ancient times and still today is one in which the mother stays home with the family, but this was not so in Sparta. It was different, as there was no real family.
- It is said that a foreigner once asked the wife of King Leonidas why Spartan women were able to influence men more than wives in other cities, and she replied, "we are the only women who can control men, because we are the only women who gave birth to men".
