The Reduction of Speech Sounds in Connected Speech
The process of communication is very important to provide information to other persons. Communication can be broadly classified into verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication includes written and oral communication whereas the non-verbal communication includes body language, facial expressions, visuals, diagrams, pictures, etc. used to communicate a message.
The term paper deals with the oral part of verbal communication. Oral communication refers to the spoken part in the communication process. Oral communication can be face-to-face communication, conversation over the phone, speech or interview on TV, radio etc. Spoken conversations are influenced by voice modulation, pitch, volume and even the speed and clarity of speaking.
“Today language students are considered successful if they can communicate effectively in the target language.” (Kramina 2000:65) It means that communicative skills are thought to be important. The success in communication depends on communicative competences. Communicative competence is what you know in order to be able to communicate effectively. (Thornbury 2006:37) It consists of three main components:
• Linguistic competences;
• Sociolinguistic competence;
• Pragmatic competences.
Each of the competences can be subdivided into more detailed competences. …
A good way how to present a personality in front of an audience is by using proper speaking skills. Whenever a person needs to speak in front of an audience, the person needs to know how to be successful, how to achieve success by the speaking. A person can speak excellently if he/ she knows how to appropriately use word stresses, voice pitches, modification of speech sounds, etc. Hence, the goal of the term paper is to see whether formal and informal register influences the speech. The method used in the paper is discourse analysis by means of comparing the transcribed interviews and speech. The results show the difference between formal and casual speaking. The difference is in speed and reduced speech sounds. The general conclusions of the paper: the difference between formal and informal speaking is in speed of speaking, clarity of speaking, sentence stresses and, of course, reduced speech sounds.
