In the book “The picture of Dorian Gray” it is made quite clear to the readers that the book focuses on the interpersonal relationships of men. However, what seems to slip the minds of readers is the treatment and representation of women showcased in the book. Whether or not Oscar Wilde intended for this book to be a satirical novel is still heavily debated, that being said, even if the novel itself is satirical the practices and ideals that the satire portrays should still be put in question. This essay will examine whether the book “The picture of Dorian Gray” is an accurate representation of the misogyny and the gender roles imposed in the Victorian era England and whether or not the writers' personal views on women affected the contents of the book. …
