Conclusion
Downsizing, like any other business procedure, requires careful management. Effective and successful downsizing is not simple; in fact the process can be quite complex and multifaceted. It is important to maintain consistency throughout the process, both consistency of strategy and consistency of treatment of the people involved.
Referring to the above-mentioned case study, I think the plan presented can be successful as I have concentrated on some key aspects, considering the organisational circumstances. I think the implementation of an external supervisor is essential in order to maintain objectivity in decision making. Furthermore, the special support for survivors and separated employees was another key aspect for me, considering the particular situation with semi-skilled and unskilled employees being all their working life in this organisation.
In my opinion, no general formula exists on how to downsize and re-configure an organisation but it is important to concentrate on some key aspects and to learn from the mistakes as well as the successes, incorporating these experiences into the process.
