The weather is an important part of our life. It can change what we do and how we feel. Therefore, we often need to know what the weather will be like. Meteorologists are scientists who study the weather 24 hours a day, sevewn days s week. They try to predict, or forecast, the weather.
Weather maps
How do meteorologist know what the weather will be like tomorrow or next week? Many years ago meteorologists tried to forecast the weather by looking at it. This didn not work wery well, because weather moves very quickly. Soon meteorologists began drawing maps of the way weather moves. Meteorologists can see a picture of the weather for large areas on a map. Winter snow storms can be 1,000 miles wide! You can only see storms this big on a map.
