In conclusion, the practice of midwifery in Western countries has been shaped by various factors. In the early 19th century, the interference of medical dominance was a significant
factor which altered midwifery and the model of care. Another significant factor involved in the evolution of midwifery is the strive to seek independence from the medicalised model of care and be women centred as well as offer continuity of care. The introduction of the Bachelor of Midwifery in Australia has been a significant turning point in the evolution of midwifery in Victoria, as well as legislations, regulations and organizations. Finally, contemporary midwifery has been shaped by the study of Sociology, research and evidence based practice. Although the profession of midwifery has been oppressed in the past hundred years, I believe at the present we have reached a point where midwifery can regain its independence and look forward to providing midwifery led care. After all, midwifery is all about 'being with woman'.
