I can accept that the republicans elected to try Johnson for impeachment on the basis that his philosophy for the reconstruction and the complete emancipation of the Afro-Americans were ignorant to public and political census and perhaps even naive.
But from investigating all of the texts and sources available to me I've began to see that their were seeds of resentment towards the south, interwoven throughout the republican party, whether these were present out of fear of future opposition or a desire for revenge is open for debate.
But it could be said that there was never much of a chance for a man like Johnson who believed that the power of a nation should be distributed throughout the nation have the ability to avoid politic pressure and criticism, and his emending impeachment by the senate.
Perhaps if he was not such a stubborn man then the republican party could have manipulated his power as president and destroy any political influence or contribution the south could ever give to America.
