The main concern of this essay is examining how external forces could impact on the future development of tourism policies and plans in Algeria over the next decade. Tourism industry in Algeria has been overlooked in the past due to the country heavily relying on natural resources – oil and gas export as the main revenue source (Euromonitor International, 2010), but recently the government has decided to take action and turn the Algeria’s tourism potential into a commercial product (El Moudhajid, 2011). In 2008 National Tourism Development Plan (SDAT) was launched and it aims to develop high quality tourist centres and increase the number of tourist arrivals to 2.5 million in 2015 and 20 million by 2025 (Oxford Business Group, 2011). …
