Today I will talk about the State Forest Service of the Republic of Latvia, known as Valsts mežu
dienests, or simply VMD.
This institution plays a vital role in ensuring that Latvia’s forests remain healthy, productive, and
sustainable for future generations.
1. About the State Forest Service
The State Forest Service is a national administrative institution under the supervision of the
Minister of Agriculture.
Its mission is to ensure responsible forest management and preservation for future generations.
Forests cover more than half of Latvia’s territory, so careful supervision is crucial.
VMD is not a commercial company—it doesn’t harvest or sell timber.
