10. Kino and Juana are the only characters that have names. Kino and Juana are poor, but they are not covetous as other characters, such as doctor, priest, and byers. Kino and Juana have their own special understanding of happiness and author makes a contrast between them and other characters by using certain lexis. Lexis, concerning Kino and Juana has a positive shade, e.g. ‘happiness, excitement, joy’. Lexis, related to the rest characters conveys negative meaning, e.g. ‘stern, scorpion, illness, hard-faced, speculations, the schemes’. In addition, irony is used towards all of the characters except Kino and Juana.
11. Polysyndeton is used to create rhythm, e.g. ‘A town has a nervous system and a head and shoulders and feet’. It is has summative function, connects intention. Coupling, e.g. ‘stern and judicious’, ‘swelled and puffed’ imitates story telling. Enumeration and asyndeton serves to slow down the rhythm, e.g. ‘Kino’s pearl went into the dreams, the speculations, the schemes, the plans, the futures, the wishes, the needs, the lusts’.
