1. The first song lyrics provides us with a continuous metaphor, which is extended throughout the song and creates a vivid and expressive impression. This extended metaphor arouses a kind of visual phantasmagoria by creating a fancy dream-scape.
Pie in the sky means “promise of heaven in some vague future while suffering today”. This metaphor has an interesting origin: it comes from the song “The Preacher and the Slave”.
