We learn from history and everyday news and situations, how important cities have been, are and will be in the future, quite often exceeding significance of the states, organizations or other actors in international, regional and local playgrounds. As theory and history tells, cities are manifestation of human society since the very beginnings of urbanization, when people started to gather together at one site and even more- to create city-states, which was probably the most important step towards statehood as such. It might seem that during different ages cities lost their meaning, but it isn’t so- even empires were based on power of their cities, and major decisions about creating states and leading them were exactly in the cities. Even the term “citizen” derives from belonging to particular city; cities were who inhabitants were, they defined everything and everyone. It’s just at certain moments people were more concerned about “new logic” that was state centric. However now is probably the best time to redefine it as “old logic” and again focus on the cities as most important global players? This is question we can test daily, but even more if we pay more attention to the issues like “what creates global cities?”, “what makes city global?”, “what is the role of cities?” and “are global cities most important actors in international playground?” and others.
Attempts to get out of “old logic” and state centric frameworks of analysis are not so new anymore, and for last couple of decades we hear of that more and more, concerning both security and economic issues.…
