The most significant factors of the Kemps Ridley turtles' demise has been the harvesting of the it's eggs from their nests, and the killing of the turtles for meat. It is now illegal in Mexico and the United States to kill or exploit the Kemps Ridley turtles and their eggs. Currently the most dangerous threat to the Kemps Ridley turtle is shrimp trawls, which snag the turtles in their nets while trawling the ocean for shrimp. "Turtle excluder devices have now been developed to keep turtles out of shrimp nets." (Encyclopedia vol.2) However some fishermen are resisting these devices, claiming it hurts their ability to catch shrimp and they refuse to use them, however, any boat trawling in the designated nesting area of the Kemps Ridley turtles must be equipped with the turtle excluders.
