Palfrey illustrates her point by providing the example of the instruction provided in the faculty meeting, whereby academics were instructed "each tutor may tell his tutees their marks", Palfrey then poses an rhetorical question, "Did this mean that I was not allowed to tell my tutees?". Extreme statements often have instant impact, but have the secondary result of diminishing the very point that one sort to make. No doubt, many male readers would have concluded that there is not a serious debate to be had after reading that comment.
Nonetheless, Palfrey in her conclusions poses a series of questions for the reader and leaves them considering her propositions. She achieves her aim of raising awareness of the issue and creating a debate. She is comfortable sharing her personal experiences with the reader and covertly impresses upon the recipient - the power and value of women.
