Conclusion
Both coats of arms are interesting and historical. It is hard to compare them because they both have gone through different historical events. The main difference between them is that the coat of arms of the United Kingdom is much older than Latvian. This means that the United Kingdom’s coat of arms has had longer history of development and it has gone through more changes in the course of time than Latvian coat of arms.
But, taking into account these differences, there must be pointed out that there are also common thing between these two coats of arms:
1. In both coats of arms the lions are represented. Maybe it is because the lion symbolizes courage and nobility. (Online 7) As we know, the people from both countries have always been courageous. The difference between these two lions is in their colour: the United Kingdom has golden/yellow lion, but Latvia has red lion. The meanings of these colours are generosity (yellow/golden) and military strength (red) (Online 7). As for Latvia, this colour is completely appropriate which can be seen if we look back in the history when Latvia was formed.
2. In both coat of arms the country’s parts or districts are shown.
In Latvian coat of arms the three stars symbolizes three Latvian districts: Kurzeme-Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale. Also the red lion on the silver background represents Kurzeme and Zemgale; Vidzeme and Latgale are represented by silver griffin with a sword. (2, 11238)
