Culture
Great deal of attention is deserved to Stone age megalithic cultural temples on Malta and Goco islands. These constructions were build in 4000 B.C., even before Egyptian pyramids. These temples are considered to be oldest such-type buildings and architectural monuments which remained till this very day.
Phoenicians left nothing but tombstones on the island, but they served a great deal to decode Phoenician alphabet in 18th century.
During the time when Romans ruled over Malta people built underground tombs with altars and frescos.
Malta’s baroque achievement is chapel in Zabbar. For a short time Michelangelo spent his time in Malta and local painter Matia Preti (1613-1699) learned from him a lot.
During the time when Malta was under the United Kingdom’s roof, the buildings were build from local honey-colored stones and gave their preference to classicism. Valletta is a great example of this style.
