In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, after Huck leaves his father, he is independent for a short time, but in this short time he is free and self-dependent.
People living outside of society are in many ways free, but like Huck are running from something they do not like or are afraid of. Huck was running from his father and Miss Watson. The Mississippi River is the best setting for this novel because it symbolizes the volatility and brutality that the world has to offer when someone is facing it by themselves.
