When asked if he would support an amendment to the U.S. constitution to ban gay marriage, President Bush said "Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. If activist judges insist on redefining marriage by court order, the only alternative will be the constitutional process."(qtd. in USA Today). As Helen of Troy was the face that launched a thousand ships, this quote launched a national debate over the right for gays to marry. I intend to explore why there is so much controversy surrounding this subject and why so many people are against it.
