Each court, especially in the provinces, has its own cadre of practitioners and a visiting deputy of a professional tribunal will soon begin to recognise the regulars and form an assessment of their quality and ability. The particular advantage is that he or she can indicate at an early stage if a particular line of argument or a particular recommendation in a pre-sentence is accepted and this very much cuts down the time that needs to be spent by an advocate as compared with that
required by a lay tribunal. Advocates both know and appreciate this particular quality in a District Judge.
