The play, Othello, by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy with many elements. The main characters of the play are Othello and Iago. Othello is a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and Iago is his ensign. Iago expected to be appointed as Othello's lieutenant; however, Othello appointed another man, Cassio.
