The Gilded Age was an age of corruption. It was run by political machines, local groups wanting to ensure their party stayed in power. The political machines were a feudal system in themselves. At the top of the political machine was the boss, such as Boss Tweed, a well known boss for his corruption in New York. The time period was called the Gilded Age because gilded means covered in gold and to the outside eye it seemed as if the United States was prospering with no trouble at all but when you really examined the things going on you found out this was the exact opposite.
