Conclusion:
The decision to dismiss this employee was a difficult one. As her supervisor, I was aware of the importance for her to secure a full time position within the institution. I was aware of how hard she had worked in previous years obtaining the education to be successful in the role and the lengths taken to support her in other positions within the department. She was felt to be a valued employee who was supported by others and
well liked by coworkers. I could not disregard or dismiss the impact of being banned from working within the institution would have on her future.
Upon review of the audited information, the individual had accessed in excess of 100 charts within a 6-month period of which there was no reasonable explanation. In discussion with the physicians, we were able to eliminate a possible 3 records that might be felt to be appropriate to access in this case. …
