THE FUTURE OF CMM IN PAKISTAN
With the recent recession in American economy in general and IT sector in particular ( NASDAQ jumping from around 5000 to 1600), some Pakistani software companies are badly hit. Before the recession some well-known Pakistani companies had ambitions to achieve CMM Level-3 by year 2002. The recession has made them reconsider their priorities. In some cases this has pushed the targeted CMM certification time to year 2003-04; while in other cases the CMM certification has been dropped off from the priority list all together. Given this bleak picture the future of CMM does not look very bright. Software Industry in Pakistan annually generates around 25-30 million $ in exports - and thus is a very small industry. The need of the hour is to increase the software exports and CMM certification can pave the way for this. One must not forget though, that CMM certification is just one piece of the puzzle - but nevertheless a very substantial piece.
