Alright, so let's pretend you're a Canadian officer and a serial killer has been killing victims in Toronto. You and your crew have been assigned to catch him. Would you use criminal profiling? If you did, the basis for catching the killer would be to look for a white male, aged 20-30, who is sociable and suffered abuse as a child. Yeah, good luck. Criminal profiling truly does not help catch a killer and cannot be used as a basis for a search or arrest. In the Canadian legal system, there are very few specialized criminal profilers, simply because the demand is so low. Nevertheless, understanding human behaviour can lead to sociological observations. Like what makes people gay? Some say genetics has a part in it. Some also say that serial killing could be genetic. The possibility that someone can be genetically predisposed to serial killing, or being gay, is a stretch. With most things, it all comes down to the upbringing and society and our personal relationships shape who we are, not our biology.…
