This was the story of a man who had learned (from someone like a witch doctor) to produce a “terror shout”, that would kill anyone who heard it unprotected.
It was easy-reading, because it wasn’t ghost, horror or fear-caused story, and it was more or less based just on short-story principles. Story’s most significant purpose was to help us to find out our own secret talents, understanding their point (of the matter) and try to use them correctly, not doing worse to others, otherwise it will come back in twofold.
Moreover, Robert Graves shows us, how important dreams can be, their meanings can change our lives, just by believing or not-believing them. The characters in the story were the ones, who believed, that’s why their dreams came true. They were waiting for something unusual happening to them, that’s why all the following happened.
All their lives they were whereabouts of the soul, as thinking, the soul was continually resident in the body, and I completely agree with that – it is more likely to be resident in the body than outside it.
The point of view of Robert Graves about birth and death made me think more about it, as he said – “Birth and death are so odd a mystery that the principle of life may well lie outside the body which is the visible evidence of living” – it’s not quite right to think about it this way.…
