The Germans thought they were being attacked by the United States, so they fought back which forced the United States into the to defend their merchant ships (The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia. "World War I: Causes"). The British got exactly what they wanted, but in a very devious way. The dirty tactics of the British brought America into a war that would eventually cost them 22, 625, 253, 000 dollars and 364, 800 American lives ("Lessons on World War I: War Costs.", "Lessons on World War I: Casualties" ). And we consider them good friends?
<Tab/>Once World War I was over, the British would be involved in what would eventually lead to World War II. The British and the French had such contempt for the Germans, that they severely punished them in the treaty that ended World War I, the Versailles Treaty. They forced the Germans to admit total guilt for the war, pay huge war reparations to the Allies, downsize their military, and unoccupy the Rhineland ("World War I"). These heavy punishments are what Adolph Hitler played off of to win the favor of the German people and motivate them for the second world war.
<Tab/>The French and The British sat by and watched Hitler commit violation after violation of the Versailles Treaty. Hitler re-occupied the Rhineland, began to re-build the German army, invaded Czechoslovakia, and other violations of the treaty, but the British and French acted like it never happened (Spodek, Howard.
