Defining Patriotism
Three thousand years ago, as they marched out of the city, headed for war, the Spartans would halt to salute the gods. The soldiers weren't sure if they would ever be back to the City again, but they felt good in knowing that the city-state they risked their life for, would be watched over by the Gods. They believed that the very motive that they were combating for was in harmony with divine will. This principle was one of the early manifestations of what would we now deem patriotism. …
