Pipeline corrosion is the deterioration of pipes, inside or out, and fittings due to interaction with its environment. Because pipe corrosion is most problematic in metal pipes, corrosion is often defined in terms of galvanic cells and electro-chemistry. However, pipe corrosion applies to all types of pipes and all materials of construction. Pipe corrosion can be measured in many ways, some more intrusive than others. The most common ways to measure pipeline corrosion involve the use of electromagnetic waves. The waves are sent axially through the pipes and their frequencies are analyzed to assess corrosion. This technique can cover long distances of pipes and in many cases can even go around bends.
