Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22, 1898 in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony (Germany). His father was a bookbinder, and his family was of the Middle Class. He studied at the University of Munster, but was recruited into the German army at the age of 18. He fought on the Western front and was wounded 5 times, the last being severe. After the war he became a teacher, and sometimes worked as a sportswriter and racing-car driver. In 1928 his first book, Im Western Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front), was first released, and it quickly made Remarque famous at age thirty-three. A film based on the book, with the same name, because an instant success in 1930. In 1931, the sequel, titled The Road Back, was released. While it did not do as well, it was still fairly successful. Remarque moved to Switzerland in 1932. His books were banned by the Nazi's in 1933 and he lost his German Citizenship in 1938. …
